2018 Proprietary Red, Sonoma County
Tough to follow the 2021 SF Chronicle Wine Competition Gold Medal winner but this latest vintage of our coveted and revered Proprietary Blend is EPIC. The 2018 is pure bold red bliss. Complex and elegant yet powerful, we love this balance of ripe fruit, herbal aromatic intensity, minerality and structural power. Concentrated levels of crème de cassis, chocolate and graphite give way to a full-bodied and seamless wine that over-delivers yet again. The palate is explosive and the finish is long and layered. It’s drinking incredibly well now, despite its relative youth. So go ahead and enjoy it now or hold and try again in a few years. And then again in 2030, cheers-ing to 10 years since you worked in your underpants and a blazer. That sure calls for a celebration.
Sip with the skirt steak/chimichurri featured recipe, slice up some aged sharp white cheddar and charcuterie or smather a seared ribeye with blue cheese butter. Perfection.
2018 Trailblazer Sonoma County
Deep purple color. Bright and dense boysenberry and red currant jelly with hints of strawberry licorice are the result of the marriage of zinfandel and petite sirah. The rich, fruit-dominant midpalate swims over and settles into a looooong herbal, English breakfast finish. In between, we sensed spices like cardamom and green peppercorns and touches of orange pith. This ones got alot goin on, folks. Tingly tannins will give it cellar life...this is a terrific vintage of Trailblazer that you won't want to miss. Pairs perfectly with Japanese Pork Tonkatsu--pork cutlets with a plum based barbeque/curry sauce.
2018 Reserve Chardonnay Sonoma County
Selected from two of our favorite vineyard blocks from Sangiacomo Family Vineyards, this release features the Home Ranch and Kiser vineyards. The wine was completely vinified in oak. First fermented in neutral oak and aged on the lees for 3 months. The process continues where the wine was racked to brand new medium toast French oak barrels for 6 months to achieve the toasty, vanilla notes. A secondary malo-lactic fermentation was induced to lengthen the palate texture and complement the bright, natural acidity.
The aromatics fill the glass with notes of lightly baked apples and a touch of butterscotch and minerality. On the palate notes of carmel and creme brulee prevail leading to a finish that is smooth and buttery with the perfect balance of acidity.
2019 Fume Blanc, Sonoma County
This Fumé vintage requires no fanfare or hoopla---it's just that GOOD. It was created by harvesting the best of the MacLeod Sauvignon Blanc lots--hillside and flats--and finished in neutral French oak barrels with toasted heads for about four months. From the fresh citrus zest, bright melon and tropical nose to the lush and round palate tinged with notes of vanilla, this is definitely a welcome return to the Highwayman lineup. Perfect all year 'round and pairs especially well with lobster mac 'n cheese. Or oysters on the half with jalapeño mignonette. Or tarragon chicken salad. Or an empty glass...
Only 50 cases made--don't miss it!
2018 RESERVE CABERNET SAUVIGNON, SONOMA COUNTY
THIS IS YOUR CABERNET.
The Ultra-cab returns to show us what it can do - powerhouse, year after year. Fantastically dense violet/ruby color - it oozes body and exudes strength - and that's just on the first swirl! Notes of rich black currant and cassis are in the forefront but not far behind are the minerally gravel and faint lead pencil notes to balance. Strong finish that creams "I was aged in oak for a hellofa long time" (18 months as a matter of fact), providing the toasty vanilla accents. Present tannins let us know we can hold on to this stunner.
Pair it with that tomahawk steak you've been admiring at the butcher counter for so long. Grill it and serve with herb butter and charred green onions.
DOXY'S CHARM, SPARKLING ROSÉ, Sonoma County
Doxy's Charm-ed her way back! She's the feminine-yet-strong side of the Highwayman. With the lovely pale salmon hue and the dancing bubbles--we see the softness on approach--followed by layers of aromas of toasty hazelnuts, ripe strawberries and crisp apples. Soft notes of rose petals, steely minerality and bright acidity round out this stunner. Made in the traditional Methode Champenoise with 45% Pinot Noir, 42% Chardonnay, 13% Pinot Meunier. Perfect for virtual happy hours, virtual celebrations, and general SIP-ping. Pun intended. Virtual cheers friends!
2017 Reserve Pinot Noir, Sonoma County
The telltale dried cherry and bright strawberry on the nose guides us down the road of sensing cranberry compote on the entry and mid-palate, balanced by herbal tea and cedar on the lingering back end. Notes of minerality and clean, light tannins round this beauty out and drinks extremely well now or can be cellared for 5-7 years. Pairs delightfully with all things Springtime--like grilled rack of lamb with morel mushroom cream pappardelle, prociutto-wrapped grilled asparagus or wild mushroom wellington.
